Japan's Denial |
While the vast majority of people in Japan do not deny massacres, there are still those who do. In an effort to stir Japanese nationalist sentiments and win votes, the far right in Japan has made a concentrated effort to revise history, and make it seem as those Japan did nothing wrong. Thus massacre denial, along with other problematic and offensive stances, have been taken up by powerful politicians. Even the mayor of Nanjing's sister city in Japan denied the massacre, while a Chinese delegation was visiting (Armstrong). While the far right has taken no official stance on the massacres and the denial incidents are only individuals opinions, the amount of incidents and concentration within the far right suggests a problem. The current, far right Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, has visited the Yaksukuni war shrine. The war shrine's accompanying museum denies the massacre and claims that pearl harbor was an American plot.
